Nov 17: Pakistan scrapped a plan to import 100,000 tonnes of sugar to build reserves as domestic output expands, a government official said. The government will build emergency reserves by purchasing 200,000 tonnes of sugar from local mills instead, Mr. Ateeq-ur-Rehman, a spokesman for the industries ministry, said in a phone interview. Pakistan announced the import plan on Oct.13 to prevent a surge in prices after floods in southern Sindh province inundated about 2.2 million acres (890,308 hectares) of farmland this year, damaging cane, cotton and rice crops.
