The food ministry has demanded an additional Rs 35,547 crore from the finance department to meet its shortfall in amount allocated for food subsidy in the Budget for 2011-2012 and its actual requirement.
However, the finance department has not concurred with this demand stating that this could be considered when the revised estimate of 2011-2012 is released. The requirement for food subsidy has swelled to Rs 82,786 crore for the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in 2011-2012 as against the budget allocation of Rs 60,084 crore.
Funds requirements rose because of heightened subsidy this year due to record procurement of grains, additional allocation of five million tonnes of grains from May 2011 to March 2012 at below poverty line rates and arrears from the past years. Past years` arrears are estimated to be Rs 10,302.63 crore.
