With the softening trend in global prices of sweetener, the co-operative sugar millers on Wednesday demanded the government should immediately allow exports of one million tonnes to improve their cash flows for making payments to sugarcane farmers. “We will miss the bus if the government does not immediately allow export of at least one million tonnes of sugar. Declining trend in the international sugar prices has started. Therefore, it will be prudent to allow exports,” National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) Managing Director Vinay Kumar said. Kumar pointed out the global prices of refined sugar in London have dipped to $690 per tonne from $706 per tonne in last one week. The government had allowed exports of 1.5 MT of sugar under Open General Licence (OGL) in three equal tranches in the 2010-11 marketing year (Oct-Sept).
