NEW DELHI: The country has ample stock of sugar and its price will remain under check, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Thursday.

In a statement issued by the ministry after a review meeting, Paswan said the country has started with a carryover stock of 7.71 million tonnes of sugar in the current sugar season 2016-17.

"The production of sugar has been estimated at about 22.52 million tonnes in the current sugar season. While domestic consumption is estimated at about 25.5 million tonnes, the stock position at the close of the current season (September 2017) is likely to be 4.73 million tonnes, which will be carried forward for the next sugar season 2017-18," Paswan said. "Thus, the total availability of sugar in the country would be sufficient to meet domestic consumption (demand)."

Sugar production in the next season (2017-18) is not only expected to be good but also likely to start early and, therefore, there will be no shortage of domestically produced sugar in India, the minister said. "By November 2017, another 2 million tonnes would be available from early crushing."
