The Centre on Thursday imposed stock limits on sugar mills over the festival season till the end of October.
For September, mills have been asked to keep only 37 per cent of the total supplies produced during the 2015-16 marketing year; the limit is fixed at 24 per cent of total supplies for October.
“It has been decided to impose stock limits on sugar stock to be held by sugar mills at the end of September and October 2016,” Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan tweeted. He also posted two tweets on the limits imposed. The decision aims to increase the supplies in the market, in a bid to keep a check on the price of sugar.
Most mills holding their stocks will now be forced to sell their inventories in the market.
