Raw sugar futures fell on Tuesday as the strong pace of production in Brazil kept the market on the defensive while physical demand remained sluggish. Brazil’s industry group Unica reported that sugar production had reached 19.88 million tonnes so far this season, up from 16.30 million tonnes in the same period last year. October raws eased by 0.12 cents to 20.55 cents per lb . The International Sugar Organization, in its first full assessment of the forthcoming 2016/17 season, forecast on Tuesday that there would be a global sugar deficit of 7.05 million tonnes. October white sugar was off $0.30 at $539.90 a tonne. Arabica coffee futures, meanwhile, dipped slightly on ample supplies. December arabica coffee was down 0.45 cents at $1.4465/lb, while September robusta slipped by 0.3 per cent to $1,778 a tonne. New York cocoa futures were slightly lower, with December down 0.4 per cent at $2,914 a tonne. December London cocoa was off by £50 at £2,322 a tonne.
