NEW DELHI: States have backed the government's decision not to include the goods and services tax (GST) rate in the Constitution, providing a boost to the NDA government's efforts to get the long-delayed reform legislation passed in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. Congress wants the tax rate to be included in the Constitution, an idea which the government rejects, resulting in the GST Bill being held up.
"There was deliberation and the union finance minister will communicate to other parties the decision on this.. He will explain to them that it (rate) does not go in Constitution amendment, but it can go in the (GST) Bill, it can go in the Act. There is deliberations happening on that issue," Mitra told reporters after the meeting.
