Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially announced the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), which has India, the United States, and Brazil as its founding members, as being launched on Saturday. He urged G20 member states and invited nations to join the group that aims to improve international cooperation in biofuels and intensify their use.

Addressing the G20 Summit that opened in Delhi today, the PM said, “Today, the need of the hour is that all countries should work together in the field of fuel blending. Our proposal is to take an initiative at a global-level to take ethanol blending in petrol up to 20 percent. Or alternatively, we could work on developing another blending mix for the greater global good, one that ensures a stable energy supply while also contributing to climate security. In this context, today, we are launching the Global Biofuel Alliance. India invites all of you to join this initiative.”

A major project and priority under India's G20 presidency, the GBA has been in the works for some time. As the world's top producers and users of biofuels, Brazil, India, and the US would collaborate with other interested nations and agencies to develop the GBA, the government had stated in February. The alliance will cooperate with pertinent current regional and global organisations as well as projects in the bioenergy, bioeconomy, and energy transition domains.

"The goal of this alliance is to promote collaboration and increase the use of sustainable biofuels, notably in the transportation industry. It will put a focus on boosting markets, easing international commerce in biofuels, developing practical policy lesson-sharing, and offering technical support for national biofuels programmes around the world, " the government had stated in February, adding that it will also highlight the best practises and success stories already in place.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had stated at the Goa event in July that "this will be a landmark event in the history of the global energy market and has enormous potential on the lines of OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries)".
