The Union government on Monday tabled the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2022 that seeks to repeal 26 non-financial laws and 39 appropriation acts that are past their utility.
The list of laws to be repealed includes two from the colonial era — The Land Acquisition (Mines) Act, 1885 and The Sugar-Cane Act, 1934. “The Land Acquisition (Mines) Act specified it has to be read with the Land Acquisition Act, 1870. Since a new land acquisition act has already been enacted in 2013, the old law has lost its significance,” said an official.
The bill is set to repeal seven laws came into effect in 2019 — including the Aadhaar Amendment Act— one of 2020 and five of 2018, indicating how fast the new legislations and rules overshadowed the old ones.
