510 sugar mills, which started crushing operations, have produced 14.25 million tonnes of sugar till January end, 4.57 per cent higher as compared to 2014-15 sugar season till 31st January, 2015, said Indian Sugar Mills Asociation.

However due to shortage of sugarcane, 13 sugar mills in Maharashtra and one sugar mill each in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have closed their crushing operations for the season. Maharashtra mills have so far produced 5.4 million tonnes, UP mills have produced 3.6 million tonnes and in Karnataka, 64 sugar mills have produced 2.7 million tonnes of sugar.

ISMA has estimated 26 million tonnes sugar production during sugar season in FY16.
