PUNE: India's sugar output grew 6.81% to 110.90 lakh tonnes till January 15 compared to a year ago despite lower availability of sugarcane, mainly because crushing operations began earlier this time.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association said in a press release that production in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra was higher by 3.4 lakh tonnes, 2 lakh tonnes and 1 lakh tonne respectively than in 2014-15 sugar season. "Most of the sugar mills in Maharashtra will close earlier this year compared to last season, because of lower cane production," it said.
