KOLHAPUR: Sanjeeb Patjoshi the director Pune-based Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management on Wednesday that suggested sugar factories should focus on production and marketing of byproducts to recover the production cost of sugarcane growers. He also asked the sugar industry to study the foreign market of brown coloured sugar, which is a partially refined or unrefined sugar consisting of molasses. "There is a huge demand for brown coloured sugar, known for its healthy content in foreign countries. If we keep producing sugar only and avoid production and marketing of brown coloured sugar, ethanol, co-generation plants and molasses, it's difficult to sustain," Patjoshi was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day national conference on sugar in the city. The conference is arranged by Bharatiya Sugar, an organization working for the sugar industry.
He said that the factories should be established in states like Bihar and a few eastern states, where production is possible. "The industry should generate employment for the rural youth. Let it be cooperative or private factory, rural people should be connected to the employment," he said.
Congratulating the organization on its work since 1975, Patjoshi also commended them for arranging such conference for more than a decade, he said that research papers presented in the conference should be used for the farmers. "The industry faces challenges and research can be important for industrialists to find a way out," Patjoshi said, while praising the work of Karnataka's Mudhol-based Nirani sugar industries. President Murugesh Nirani, a former Karnataka minister received a lifetime achievement award in the conference for their work in the sugar sector. Nirani has established co-generation plants, distillery units, bagasse and molasses. "Technology will only help the industry to survive the market-challenges. We should adopt the new technologies at the earliest and should use it for byproducts," he said. Nirani demanded the Central government should intervene in the sugarcane pricing as factories are unable to pay a fair and remunerative price. "We must have a double-fold market. The sugar used for industry should be sold at a higher price," he said. Pramodkumar Belsare of the Pune-based Indiana Sucro-Tech Company received the lifetime achievement award in the production sector. Belsare has been producing sugar industry products for the last couple of decades. He also stated that there is a need of change in sugar policies and suggested the factories for the production of consumer necessary goods. In all, Nirani presented 38 different awards to the best factory, technical advisor, producer and best research paper at the conference, Bharatiya's president Vikramsinh Shinde and other guests.
