Sugarcane farmers in India are undeterred by the dues owed to them by sugar mills and have increased area under the crop, shows data released by the farm ministry on Friday.
Till date, 4.07 million hectares (ha) have been planted with sugarcane in the country in the 2015-16 crop season, marginally higher than the 4.06 million ha under the crop at this time last year.
Area under the cane crop stands at around 5 million ha for the planting season and these trends mean cane acreage will remain the same or go up in 2015-16. This is despite the fact that mills owe farmers over
Rs.
21,000 crore in dues in the ongoing sugar season 2014-15 (October 2014 to September 2015), on account of the crashing prices of sugar in domestic as well as global markets.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), mills in the country produced 27.84 million tonnes (mt) of sugar till 15 May, 16% higher than the previous year (2013-14).
Increased area under the crop, despite the dues, is also testimony to the fact that farmers feel sugarcane is a safe crop to grow. Sugar mills have to compulsorily buy the cane produced at a fair and remunerative price (FRP) declared by the centre. States often declare a state advised price (SAP) over FRP, making cane a lucrative crop.
Returns to cane growers is 50% more than returns from competing crops like wheat, paddy or cotton, industry body ISMA said in a release on 18 May.
