According to ISMA, sugar production so far has risen mainly due to increase in the per hectare yield in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, the two leading cane growing states. Maharashtra achieved an all-time high in sugar production at 10.35 million tonnes till April of this marketing year, as against 7.71 million tonnes, while the output in Uttar Pradesh has reached 7.01 million tonnes as compared to 6.50 million tonnes in the said period. Sugar production in Karnataka increased to 4.7 million tonnes from 4.11 million tonnes, while that of Tamil Nadu has also risen to 9,00,000 tonnes from 7,00,000 tonnes in the review period.
