NEW DELHI – The Centre may set the sugar sale quota for April at 1.80 mln tn, lower than the March quota of 2.45 mln tn, a government official said.
The likely lower sale quota for April can be attributed to depressed sugar prices through March. Mills had complained that sales quota for March was higher than requirement.
The government may also allow mills to sell their unsold sugar quota for March in April, the official said.
The government has been fixing the quantity of sugar available for sale on a monthly basis to support prices and help mills clear cane arrears, which had hit 200 bln rupees at the end of January.
Sugar prices have remained below the cost of production throughout this year due to a glut in the domestic market.
Indian Sugar Mills Association has estimated production of the sweetener during 2018-19 (Oct-Sep) at 30.7 mln tn, lower than last year's record 32.3 mln tn.
