After the police forcibly removed BKU Lakhowal leader Mahinder Singh on Wednesday evening from protesting in front of the Dhuri sugar mill and got him admitted to a hospital, another BKU leader sat on a hunger strike and his health has started deteriorating. Mahinder Singh was on hunger strike since Monday for the release of cane growers’ dues.
SAD chief Sukhbir Badal and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema visited the protesters. In Dhuri two different protests have been going on for the release cane growers’ dues. The cane growers with their family members have been sitting on indefinite protest on the Sangrur-Dhuri road since March 7. BKU Lakhowal leader Ujagar Singh with the support of various organisations has started the indefinite strike in front of the sugar mill.
“Our party is standing with the cane growers. The state government is helping private sugar mill owners and causing serious problems for cane growers,” said Sukhbir.
Jarnail Singh Jahangir, district press secretary, BKU Lakhowal, claimed that Ujagar Singh’s health had started deteriorating and if anything happened to him, the owner of the mill and the state government would be responsible for it.
