Sugar production till March 15 rises 6%

Sugar production in the current sugar season up to March 15, 2019 grew 6% to 27.34 million tonne, compared with 25.82 million tonne in the same period of the previous sugar season.
The ISMA had earlier said considering the trend of yields, recoveries and drawal of sugarcane as also diversion of some ‘B’ heavy molasses to ethanol, sugar production in the current season is estimated to be around 30.7 million tonne, which is 5-6% less than 32.5 million tonne in the previous season.
During 2018-19 SS, 527 sugar mills were in operation and as on March 15, 2019, 154 mills have stopped crushing and 373 mills are continuing it. On the corresponding period of the last season, 399 mills were in operation. Mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka were closing fast and their crushing season is on the verge of closing, ISMA said in a release on Monday.
In Maharashtra, sugar production till March 15 was higher at 10.008 million tonne as compared to 9.384 million tonne last year. In the current 2018-19 SS, 85 mills have closed crushing operations while 110 sugar mills are still operating. On the corresponding date in last season, 38 mills had closed their operations while 149 mills were in operation.
In UP,116 sugar mills are in operation and 8.414 million tonne was produced as compared to 8.439 million tonne produced on the corresponding date of last year.
In case of Karnataka, 67 sugar mills have produced 4.245 million tonne and 56 mills have closed their operations, while 11 mills are in operation. During the corresponding period last year, 65 sugar mills had produced 3.510 million tonne. Of the 65 sugar mills, 17 mills were in operation as on March 15, 2019 and 48 mills had closed their operations.
In case of Tamil Nadu, 29 sugar mills are in operation and have produced 5.40 lakh tonne as against 4.33 lakh tonne produced on the corresponding date.
Gujarat has produced 9.80 lakh tonne with 14 sugar mills in operation. Last year, 9.10 lakh tonne of sugar was produced on the same date.
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, 25 sugar mills have produced 6.5 lakh tonne, of which 3 mills have stopped crushing. Last year, 6.40 lakh tonne was produced on the corresponding date and 14 mills were in operation.
In Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, sugar production has been in the order of 6.65 lakh tonne,2.95 lakh tonne, 5.45 lakh tonne, 4.90 lakh tonne and 4.75 lakh tonne, respectively.
