Pune: Some sugar mills in south Maharashtra have decided not to begin sugarcane crushing as farmers have demanded more money for this season’s crop, beyond what is considered as fair and remunerative prices (FRP).
While this will delay the production in the new season, output per tonne of cane could still be higher as sugar recovery is more for crop harvested in November than in October.
Mills from the Kolhapur region are awaiting clarity over crop prices. The Swabhimani Shetkari Sangathana, a farmers’ association, has announced that it will not let the mills operate until they agree to pay Rs 200 per tonne over and above the FRP of sugarcane.
According to officials at the state sugar commissionerate, of the 194 sugar mills that had applied to get crushing licenses, 55 sugar mills have received them and 32 mills had started sugar production. “The decision about issuing crushing licences to 29 sugar mills has been kept on hold as they have not paid the FRP of the previous year,” said an official at the sugar commissionerate. But five sugar mills from the Kolhapur division have declared that they will stop crushing until the sugar cane price issue has been resolved. The department is confident that most of the mills will begin operations by November 20.
The migrant harvesting and transport labour will also start moving to factory locations after Diwali. Sugar industry insiders believe that
any discussions about resolving the deadlock over sugarcane prices will happen only after Diwali. The delay will, however, not have a
major impact on sugar production as recovery is higher in November. But the delay can hit farmers in drought affected regions as they struggle to water the cane until it is harvested for crushing.
