MEERUT: Sugarcane farmers in the state this year have been paid Rs 2,054 for their produce till date. The number reflects a positive trend as they were paid only Rs 467 crore last year. Clearing of farmers' payment dues was one of the promises made by the BJP before the Assembly elections in UP.
According to officials, there are over 36 lakh sugarcane growers in UP and more than 21 lakh hectare of sugarcane-cultivation area. Despite sugarcane being a cash crop, farmers were left cash-strapped for the last few years as several sugar mills didn't disburse money in time. Decent payment for sugarcane farmers was promised by almost every party campaigning for the Assembly elections. BJP had promised payment would be done within 14 days of mills purchasing the sugarcane if it came to power.
Sitaram Rana, a farmer, told TOI, "This financial year, the government is taking better care of sugarcane farmers. Mills are also functioning earlier than usual." Additional cane commissioner, VK Shukla, said, "This year, the government is strict on the issue. All mills owners have been instructed to disburse payment on time. The sugar market is looking up as the central government has stopped the import of raw sugar. This time, a joint account was created between the district cane officer and the mill administration. Around 85% of the money that comes from selling the sugar is deposited in the account and later used for payment to farmers."
