BIJNOR: An FIR was filed against BJP MLA from Dhampur Ashok Rana and 24 of his supporters for allegedly barging into a private sugar mill in Seohara near here and beating up its staff at around 6:30 pm on Friday. Mill workers staged a protest, while Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mill Association (UPSMA) general secretary Deepak Guptara wrote to chief minister Yogi Adiyanath about the incident.
According to the complaint filed by cane manager of the mill Brijesh Sharma, at around 10:30 pm on Friday, the MLA and his supporters came in 10 to 12 cars and started thrashing the mill workers, including Sharma. Soon after, one of the MLA's supporters, Jogendra Singh, filed a cross complaint, saying Rana had been attacked and fired at when he visited the mill.
Police filed the FIR against Rana on Saturday under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 147 (rioting) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the IPC after the mill workers staged a demonstration on Saturday morning, demanding that the MLA be arrested. However, police refused to file an FIR based on Singh's complaint. The demonstration was called off after police assured mill workers of required action in the matter.
Superintendent of police (SP) Bijnor, Prabhakar Chaudhary said, "Prima facie, it looks like the MLA scuffled with mill staff. Police are looking at CCTV footage and if they prove the allegations to be true, the MLA can be arrested."
About Singh's complaint, Chaudhary said, "A person had filed another complaint against the mill officials alleging they fired at the MLA, but police rejected his complaint after investigating the matter."
Rana, who has been involved in scuffles previously, insisted that he had been at the mill to promote the cause of sugarcane farmers. "Sugar mill officials, who are hand-in-glove with middlemen, deprive farmers by purchasing sugarcane from touts at a lower price. I had called up Sharma several times on the issue but he didn't respond."
The MLA added, "I had asked the mill authorities to issue tokens to farmers so that they could bring their produce to the mill on time and sow wheat thereafter. There was a hot argument between me and the mill officials, but I never thrashed anyone."
The UPSMA general secretary's letter to the chief minister read, "The incident is not only strongly condemnable but also shows the vulnerability of our mills to pressure from workers of the ruling party. We strongly urge the government to ensure that staff at Seohara mill, or any other mill in the state do not face hooliganism by BJP members."
