Some sugar mills in western Uttar Pradesh are likely to begin cane-crushing operations for 2017-18 (October-September) on October 10, said Sanjay Bhoosreddy, Principal Secretary at Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industry.
Mills will halt cane processing for a week on account of Diwali, scheduled for October 19, and resume crushing operations by October 25, Bhoosreddy said on the sidelines of Kingsman Sugar Conference.
Most mills in the State are expected to begin crushing sugarcane by late October, said Bhoosreddy.
However, millers expressed concerns regarding crushing operations in eastern Uttar Pradesh on the back of heavy rains recently.
The region was hit by floods last month due to incessant rains and release of water from rivers originating from Nepal.
