Sugar mills in Haryana achieve record cane-crushing

CHANDIGARH: Cooperative Sugar Mills in Haryana have set new records in crushing of sugarcane as well as sugar production during the crushing season 2016-17. The sugar mills have produced 35.50 lakh quintals sugar by crushing 362.04 lakh quintals of sugarcane which is highest since the inception of cooperative sugar mills in the State.

While stating this here today, a spokesman of Cooperation Department said that with a view to ensure transparency in the purchase process, e-procurement system has been implemented by Sugar Fed and Cooperative sugar mills.

He said that Cooperative Sugar Mills in the State have purchased 362.31 lakh quintals of sugarcane during the crushing season 2016-17. Payment of Rs 1140.57 crore has been made to the farmers with the financial assistance of Rs 175 crore made available by the State Government.

The spokesman said that as a result of laying special emphasis on the sugarcane development programmes, significant improvement has been witnessed in the balancing of varieties.

During the last few years, the area under the early variety of high sugar or advanced varieties has been increased from 20 per cent to 62 per cent which is the highest percentage so far. He said that the Cooperative Sugar Mill, Shahbad and Cooperative Sugar Mill, Karnal have been honoured at national level. While Shahbad Cooperative Sugar Mill got first prize in technical efficiency, Cooperative Sugar Mill, Karnal got second prize in sugarcane development.

He said that during the crushing season 2016-17, sugar mills of Karnal, Sonipat, Jind, Meham, Palwal, Kaithal and Gohana have earned additional revenue by saving bagasse of Rs 5.33 crore. Similarly, the Shahbad, Rohtak and Gohana Cooperative Sugar Mills have supplied 7.62 crore units of electricity worth Rs 30.86 crore to the State Grid.

The highest rate of Rs 320 per quintal for early variety, Rs 315 per quintal for mid variety and Rs 310 per quintal for late variety of sugarcane has been given to the farmers during the year 2016-17, he added.
