10% duty on sugar imports mulled

The food ministry has proposed imposing 10 per cent import duty on sugar, as the country has surplus domestic production.  The zero-import duty regime expired on June 30.  The government had scrapped the import duty in February 2009 to boost domestic supply.  Sources said the food ministry had made a recommendation to rationalise the duty structure in line with that on other farm commodities.
