April 17: India, the world's second biggest sugar producer, made its biggest delivery against sugar futures on NYSE Liffe, according to Czarnikow Group Ltd.
The delivery from India was 2,500 lots, or 1.25 lakh tonnes, NYSE Liffe said on its Web site on Monday. "That's the most ever," said Mr Peter de Klerk, an analyst in London at Czarnikow. India's sugar exports climbed from less than 3 lakh tonnes a year in 2009 and 2010 to at least 25 lakh tonnes annually the past two years, according to US Department of Agriculture data.
India is showing they are growing in stature as far as world sugar exports, said Mr Michael MCDougall, senior director and head of the Brazil desk at Newedge in New York.
India will be the fourth largest sugar exporter in 2011-12, following Brazil, Thailand and Australia, according to the USDA. India has authorised exports of 30 lakh tonnes for the season that started in October as local supplies are "higher than demand.
