PRESS RELEASE

The Committee of ISMA in its meeting held on 30th January, 2012 reviewed the sugar production upto the end of January, 2012 for various States. A comparison was also made with last year’s actual production reports of yield, trend of sugar recovery and diversion of sugarcane by alternate sweetener manufacturers. After detailed deliberations, feedback from member factories from all across the country, and the State-wise analysis, the Committee of ISMA came to a conclusion that sugar production during 2011-12 would be at least 260 lakh tons with upward bias, if any.

The three important States, namely, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are expected to produce 90 lakh tons, 68 lakh tons and 38 lakh tons, respectively, during 2011-12 sugar season.

Sugar production upto 31st January, 2012 was 132.77 lakh tons as compared to 113.41 lakh tons on the corresponding date last year, which shows an increase of 17% over the last year. Further review of the current sugar production upto 31st Janaury, 2012 confirms that sugar production would be a minimum of 260 lakh tons.
