During Season 2012-13, not only was there lesser sugarcane crushing, but sugar recovery was also lower at about 10.03% in comparison to 10.25% of last year. Lower the recovery & lower sugarcane crush was on account of last year’s lower than normal rainfall in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Sugarcane crushing for the season was 9% lower, while sugar production was 11% lower than last year. This is due to lower sugar recovery in 2012-13 at about 11.41%, as compared to 11.65% during last year.

In Karnataka, sugarcane crushing was 4.2% lower, while sugar was 10.5% lower than last year. This has been due to the sugar recovery, which was 11.14% in 2011-12 and fell to 10.40% in 2012-13.
TN and AP produced 19.63 lakh tons & 9.93 lakh tons of sugar with 45 & 36 sugar mills under crushing operation therein respectively. Tamil Nadu also reported lower recovery of 0.46% lower than 9.33% in 2011-12.
