30
Lakh tonne non-levy sugar to be Released for July-September 2008
PRESS
RELEASE
(1.7.2008)
Government
had decided to release 30 lakh tonnes of non-levy (free sale) sugar
for the quarter July-September 2008. For the month of July, 2008,
the quota would be 12 lakh tonnes and for the months of August and
September 2008, the quota would be 18 lakh tonnes.
Government
has further decided to dismantle the second buffer stock of 30 lakh
tonnes created for a period of one year from 1.8.2007 to 31.7.2008,
on its due date i.e. 1.8.2008. The sugar factories are allowed to
sell 25% of the stock kept as buffer out of 30 lakh tonnes in the
domestic market in two months of its dismantling i.e. from 1st
August 2008 to 30th September, 2008 and the remaining 75% at any
point of time during 2008-09 sugar season commencing from 1st
October, 2008 without the requirement of release orders from the
Directorate of sugar for either quantity. The Government has already
allowed the sugar mills to sell 20 lakh tonnes of sugar held in
first buffer stock at any point of time during 2007-08 sugar season
from 1st May, 2008 upto 30th September, 2008 without the requirement
of release orders from the Directorate of sugar for that quantity.
With these decisions, it is estimated that the total availability of
non-levy sugar for sale in the domestic market during
July-September, 2008 would be 48 lakh tonnes.
A
quantity of 1.94 lakh tonnes has been released under levy sugar for
distribution in the Public Distribution System for the month of
July, 2008. Thus, the total sugar released in the month of July,
2008 would be sufficient to meet the internal demand for sugar for
this month.

KPMG
Report
The
Indian Sugar Mills Association in association with National
Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited instituted a study
on the Indian Sugar Industry – Sector Roadmap 2017 by KPMG in the
last quarter of 2006 (courtesy Indian Sugar Exim Corporation).
KPMG has recently published its report. It was released by
Shri T. Nanda Kumar, Secretary (Food), Ministry of Consumer Affairs,
Food & Public Distribution on 25th June, 2007.
KPMG
report is fairly exhaustive running over 200 pages. It is not
possible to incorporate the full report in this website.
Hence, we are including it in an executive summary thereof.
We
do hope that this document would be found objective, informative,
useful and would provide a peep into the future of the sugar sector.
